*If you are hiking this trail with children, make sure they stay with you every inch of the way! Very dangerous cliffs with slippery rocks etc...

The trail starts out with a challenging crossing of the Pleasant River. Best not to attempt in the spring time. The river is fairly wide and is generally knee-high even in the summer months. Once you do get across, it is approx. 1.5 miles to Screw Auger Falls. This trail is a side trail of the Appalachian Trail (AT), maintained by the M.A.T.C (Maine Appalachian Trail Club). Along this rim trail, you'll see 400 ft. gorges where the Pleasant River Cascades down through rocky terrain and 30 foot high waterfalls. Gorgeous area, but to be respected. Swimming in the pools is discouraged (many drownings) and care should be taken to proper footwear and hiking gear. Always go prepared for the worst!

From Screw Auger Falls to the Tote Rd. is another 3 miles with plenty of scenery along the way. Total: 8 mile loop.
