Rebuilding Jay's Covered Bridge

July 24, 2004 update continued

A view from the top
6 x 8 timbers are used as spacers between transverse 8 x 8's
Another 6 x 8 on top of that is notched to drop in over the transverse beams
The outer vertical rod ties all that together to the floor beams underneath the bottom chords

Sam uses one of the 16" beamsaws to shape the endposts
A portion of the top chord will lay in the corner cutback
The longitudinal slot is for a vertical rod

Diagonals are all installed and seated nicely
The overhanging beam on top will hold the end rafter
Shores have been removed and the upper half is under its own support now
The blocking underneath the bridge could be removed,
but will remain until the siding and roof sheathing are complete-
that additional weight is needed to achieve the final camber
