These happen at the butt joints of inner and outer bottom chord timbers
The joints are inset and overlayed with 3" oak planks
Matt is sawing the oak scarf overlays

while Matt completes tooling the shoe slots in the bottom
Cast iron shoes are inset into the top and bottom chords
The diagonal timbers will eventually seat into these shoes
