The Rebirth of a Covered Bridge

Jay, New York - 2004

April 4 - just a small stack of salvaged timbers

Spreading out the new 6 x 12 bottom chords and 12 x 12 floor beams
These members are Douglas Fir

bottom chord butt joints
This detail occurs on outer members that do not break on a floor beam
A diagonal bolt will complete the connection

Slots for oak shear keys are 1/2" deep on opposing members
The keys are 2" thick and provide an inch space between chord timbers when installed

Chip Ligon uses a template and router to tool the key slots
