Giant corporations now race to extend their influence to all parts of a largely unprepared earth. These corporations, with their virtually complete monopoly of the media, encourage the masses to avoid rational thought, and instead go on with a behavior that destroys the earth while it widens the chasm between the the rich and the poor. So much for the trickle down theory!
I should like to propose that the biggest problem facing the earth, and therefore its people, is that very "growth" that is so indispensable to capitalists. In their quest for ever greater profits, they encourage greater consumption, including the expansion of the population of consumers, justifying it by proclaiming that human life is sacred. They encourage the use of drugs to extend human life, and therefore consumption, justifying it by pretending that death is unnatural. They encourage humans to believe that fulfilling those "needs" that the corporations themselves create justify polluting earth, air and water, decimating forests and pushing all other animals toward extinction. What screwball ever said that humans were supposed to be caretakers of the earth?
Now, I cannot believe that humans will forever continue to allow themselves to be driven over a precipice, as millions of buffalo were once driven off high cliffs in order to deny sustenance to American Indians. It may take a little longer for people to wake up, but I think there are already indications that many are beginning to distrust what they are being told by those who would be their masters. We have all been reminded this year that Nature has a way of commanding attention, when the earth is abused too much. Will we get the message?
Creating such an environment is not going to be easy. Those that most profit from the current economic system will not brook any change in the status quo. Their control over the media will be invaluable as they attempt to set one people against another, denying that there is any problem confronting the world other than that posed by terrorists, and by godless liberals who think that rulings of transnational organizations such as the North American Free Trade Association and the findings of international organizations such as the United Nations and the International Criminal Court should apply to Americans as well as to people of other nations.
Americans will have to learn to honor international treaties, rather than to ignore them as our forebears once ignored treaties with the American Indians. If we people of earth stand together and refuse to participate in the destruction of the earth, we can prevail, but it will take a lot of self-discipline to "just say no" to that meism which has been hawked so incessantly by the great corporations.
So you ask "What fun will there be in that world?" Remember, that people did have fun before they set about destroying the planet. You just have to look for other less deleterious sources of satisfaction such as, for example, developing the brain that God gave you. Thinking is fun! Try it!
