Hawkins Listen to this letter: "We got the announcement of the T and are rubbing our eyes with astonishment! The greatest car ever!" I'm taking a trip out to Rockford and make this man put his money where his mouth is! |
Dielh They got the body price at $150! They can make it for $50! Sorensen made one and it only cost $50! Klingensmith Mr. Couzens will educate them! |
THE NEW FORD IS MADE WITH A LIGHT STEEL
THREE TIMES STRONGER THAN ORDINARY STEEL EVERYWHERE IN THE NEW FORD WHERE STRENGTH COUNTS YOU'LL FIND

| I mill this cylinder first a rough cut to get the sprues off then a fine milling this head must fit exactly right it takes time |
I ream holes to give a final finish. This hand reamer removes 1/1000th of an inch of metal. See tappered flutes very sharp |
That machine drills all the holes in the bloc at once then I bore the holes that means I true the holes to the right size. The bore cutter blade curves out |

Hawkins We want to turn our organization into something that can get cars to the public fast. Most companies make products to suit their customers but we want to standardize the customer and make the Ford a universal need! Klingensmith Every point where the freight rate changes we'll have an assembly plant. Hawkins Make parts here then send them to Buffalo or Philadelphia and they assemble the car and drive it to the local dealers. Klingensmith Sell the Ford everywhere for the same price, $850. CLERKS WORK TILL TEN CLERKS WORK TILL TEN Klingensmith Ration cars. Make sure every section of the country gets some. Hawkins During the New York to Seattle race we want big publicity. Every dealer has a celebration when the Model Ts roll in. TOO DAMN SLOW MILL
we got some changes

Couzens Listen to this Wills: "I considered that I was an ordinary man and I wanted what ordinary people wanted, so I put my efforts toward developing a car that would meet what I concceived was the ordinary man's needs. I was convinced the car need be made of the lightest, strongest possible materials. I found Vanadium steel." Wills Why read this to me? Couzens That'll be in all the papers signed Jim Couzens. Wipe that grin off! Wills So, you take the credit. Couzens I want to spread a network of assembly plants and dealers all over the world. I want you to help me. Wills You cleared it with Ford? Couzens Flanders told me you could build cars better than Ford Wills Sure, but assembly plants? Couzens I'm promoting you! I want us to work together, not fight. Don't do Ford's fighting for him. Ford designed the car. I don't know if he's the best man to make it. Wills You getting rid of him? Couzens Do you work with me or not? Wills All right. Couzens If Ford left, I wouldn's shed any tears. He's a dreamer, not a businessman. |
Sorensen
We can't make cars fast enough.
Ford
I figured designing her was it.
Millions need this car.
Now I have to wait.
Clean this shop up!
I want it clean!
Martin
We changed the bloc
for the last time.
Now we can roll.
Wills I know you boys are busy but I want you to know what's happening downstairs. Couzens made me assistant general manager. I'll get assembly plants ready. Buying land and all, more executive work. Sorensen Congratulations! Martin Sounds great! Wills I also got a cut of the dividends. Here's a cut for you boys! I insist! And howabout us going hunting this weekend? Sorensen Sure, I can go out a day. Martin All right. Wills Then I'll see you boys. [exit] Martin How much he give you? Sorensen A thousand dollars. Martin Me too. |
Hawkins The inventory system and parts and materials accounting system are set up in every department. There's no reason why we can't end the hold ups around here simply with better accounting. Each part has a tag. After every operation tear off a piece of the tag and record it in a master tally sheet. The tag has the part serial number and remarks on quality. This way we can get an accurate quantity and quality control. Klingensmith The racers leave New York today. Hawkins Who do we have to beat? Klingensmith A Shawmut and an Acme. Hawkins We can win! Klingensmith The roads are very bad. Why, it's possible nobody will make it! |
Federal Court, New York City
Betts But George Selden's claim is a broad claim. In 1879 this visionary mechanic illustrated an operative vehicle. Your honor, was he obliged in 1879 to illustrate every possible development in that fundamental vehicle? George Selden is merely a genius, not God! I remember the clever quip of Mr. Coudert: "There are two Fords in the New York to Seattle race
Defense lawyers talked a great deal about the Otto engine. The noted expert Dougald Clerk testified that the engines in today's automobiles are reorganized Brayton Engines embodying the essential features invented by Selden to enable the Otto Engine to be light weight and high speed, suitable for those cars
Your hone, I did not ask his this question, but in 1879
racing across the Great American Plains.
He was confident his dream would materialize.
if a poet had written this patent, under our laws he should be entitled to benefit from it.

Parker These are the years of the trusts. The manacles of Wall Street combine to drive honest men out of industry. To prevent competition so production is low and prices high. And a few rich men play their paper profits at the expense of the people!
Henry Ford worried at first and with little money and his future to stake, he tried to get a license in 1902. But they told him, "You're a fly-by-nighter, we're eliminating you." In the best interests of the industry! O it stank!
And how did they try to stifle this man's genius? By paper power construed from a meaningless patent kept alive by a patent attorney who misused his knowledge of patent law for his own gain, at the expense of the people.
Ford made good cars, became and still is the leading manufacturer of automobiles! The New York gang saw that buck slip from their grasp so they sued to make Ford pay royalties and raise prices, to deny people's needs and cater to wealth's whims! |
