Ford Hal, I can't get you stock in the company. Anderson told me it'd be against the company by-laws. If you had gotten stock they'd have gotten me in court. How about if I give you a big cut of dividends and you keep an eye on this Flanders. Wills Couzens's new man? |
THAT'S HENRY FORD GOOD TO SEE THE BOSS HE SHOULD CAN ANDRICH HE SMASHED A NEW CAR HE'S A LUSH BUT WHO CAN BLAME HIM RUSH RUSH RUSH THEY MADE A GUY FOREMAN AND DIDN'T EVEN RAISE HIS PAY GOOD TO SEE THE BOSS you men in pit five stop yacking |
Parker
You were my witness. Now the Selden lawyers
want to question you.
Ford
What questions?
Parker
The experts testified.
They want to make you look like less than an expert.
Ford
Make me look stupid?
Parker
Just answer the questions
as best you can.
P.E. Martin They fired Andrich. I run the shop. Flanders Back East we have shop principles that I haven't seen in Detroit. The Ford shop is like most backward shops Machines grouped by type. There's no concept of the flow of production. P.E. Martin No. Too many people bump into each other already. We best try to keep the work in one place Flanders Inventory runs 20 to 60 days. I can cut it down to 10! |
Wills You passed over good men when you got this Flanders Couzens You don't make enough cars! Wills Who says Flanders will? Couzens I can't wait for Ford and his pals to turn into wizards. The Model K failed. We must sell the Model N fast, or we go under! Wills You were Malcomson's pal. I'm Ford's. You got stock. I didn't. I'm watching you. Couzens Beg, borrow and steal! That's how I got my shares. That's why I got a share of the house! |
Betts
Mr. Ford, are not all gasoline automobiles today
basically the same?
Ford
They all run on gas, if that's what you mean.
Betts
That's not what I mean. They all combine certain basic elements.
They all have an engine, a transmission, wheels, steering, means to
supply the engine with fuel and keep it lubricated.
Ford
But they all go about those things in different ways.
Betts
Do they? Did you invent the engine used in the Ford car?
That's basically an Otto engine, is it not?
Ford
Yessir, but much improved.
Betts
You borrowed the carburetor you use from the work of other men,
did you not?
Ford
Yessir.
Betts
And the transmission?
Ford
We did a lot of developing on that.
Betts
The basic ideas for it came from another man's work?
Ford
Clarence King
Betts
You have been just a good collector and mechanical arranger
in getting out your present machine?
Ford
I guess you could say that.
Betts
You never designed a car that you felt
was novel enough to patent in its entirity?
Ford
They didn't patent the horse did they?
Betts
Answer my questions, don't pose your own.
If the court sustains the Selden patent
as valid and infringed and your company put under
injunction preventing you from making cars
it would be a pretty serious matter for you
would it not?
Ford
Yessir.
Mr. Couzens! Mr. Couzens.
What!
I was in Mr. Ford's office
and it's filled
with unopened letters!
Bills! Payments!
Get a secretary in there
to clean up his mess!

are too big to move
build around them

Put that jig here! Not by the drinking fountain
move it just a few feet from that miller

| where you need a driller put a driller. There's no sense always bringing the work back to one place just for drilling. C'mon roll those machines over here. Don't be afraid to dent them. Roll them over. All these machines have to be closer close as safety allows. You have enough space for a damn dance floor |

You have two halves of the bloc. Have two jigs and two production flows that run together. There are much better drillers than these. Buy three high speed millers and multiple drillers. Jig them specially for the job. Put gravity slides between these jobs. A man places the work in one spot and it'll slide down to the next job |
