Wills
We moved into the three story
building and already things
crowd up and get messy.
The luxury car work is down there,
and we'll assemble the Model C over here.
The machine work is downstairs.
I'm not sure what's going on up there.

I can't keep trained help, that's the problem,

The trouble is crowding.
They got too many men.
It ain't like the good old days.

This new top dog in the shop,
this Aldrich, is a no good drunkard!
Couzens I'm mad. I'm mad. I'm damn mad! Ford Jim, I don't like cut throat business, but I've heard of these things happening. Cut out Malcomson. Dodge don't like him. Make this Piquette plant another company, a supply company. Everybody but Malcomson gets stock Couzens The Ford Manufacturing Company supplies Ford Motor, but Malcomson's only in Ford Motor. With high prices Ford Manufacturing takes all Ford profits. Malcomson goes broke and sells! Ford, it's fool proof. Ford He sells and then what? Couzens We split his stock. Ford That's dandy. Just you and me. Couzens The only problem is you don't make enough damn cars! Orders are far ahead of production. Ford That's all right. I haven't made the car the way I want it Couzens Our business is to make profits! That's why you have stock! for profits! Ford Sure, but we need a good car. Couzens We need money now! When we got plenty of money we can be do gooders. I'm a do-gooder just like these Socialists, but damn if I'll ever do a good turn until I'm sure I'll never have to ask for handouts! |
Malcomson I have to stop them! They're cutting me out! I'll lose everything! Grey Go to court, Alex. Malcomson I am. But don't you feel some responsibility for the position I'm in? Grey Ford and Couzens work sixteen hours a day! Malcomson Everybody thinks I don't work. I work like hell! but I can't get near this car business. Grey We're making the luxury car. Malcomson Ford will sabotage it. When he doesn't like something, he wrecks it. Grey Start your own car company. Malcomson You won't sell out to me? Grey You don't have the capital. Malcomson I suppose you can't see it in your heart to will some to me so I control more than Ford? Grey I'm only your uncle, Alex, not your father. Let me die, in peace. |

Federal Court, New York City

Selden The Electric Motor Vehicle Company prosecuted the Winton Motor Company, then the largest producer of gasoline automobiles, for enfringing on my 1877 patent. After preliminary legal skirmishes, Winton saw the wisdom of my patent, and took a license under it from the EMVC. Before we proceeded to prosecute other manufacturers, the Manufacturers Mutual Association offered to buy the rights to my 1877 patent in order to form an association to keep fly-by-night companies out of the trade so that the public would no longer be embarrassed by automobiles of poor quality. Mr. Day and I saw the best interests of the industry called for such an association. We relinguished control to what became the Association of Licensed Automobile Manufacturers which enforces my 1877 patent and polices the industry for the good of all, I dare say. Parker Curious, if long named associations made good cars like Mr. Ford does then New York City, Wall Street, would be the capital of the automobile industry. Selden That is not the issue in this case, is it? I did patent the invention of the automobile. Parker That is the issue. Does your patent constitute a novel invention and whether today's automobiles owe it anything. Your 1877 patent. Yes. Did you ever see an Otto engine before you applied for your patent? Selden I studied all the engines the art had produced. Parker The Otto engine? Selden All the engines. Parker What is the difference between the Otto engine, and the Brayton engine, the one used in your patent? Selden There is no basic difference. Parker The Brayton engine is a constant compression engine, is it not? Selden The Brayton engine is a liquid hydrocarbooon engine that runs by a compression of a mixture of petroleum and air, just like all engines today. Parker At a constant compression? Selden If you like. Parker If I like? I like only the truth! Selden And the truth like you want it to be. Parker The Brayton engine compresses air and fuel outside the combustion chamber and introduces the mixture into the combustion chamber at a constant compression, does it not? Selden The Brayton engine is a liquid Parker Yes, or no, Mr. Selden? Selden You have tried several times to dictate my answers to me, and so far as I know you have not yet suceeded, and I really doubt whether you will! |

HEY HEY
Where is that parts boy.
HEY HEY
I got nothing to do

Ford Grey's dead. Dodge I say we make you president. Ford Thanks, John. Dodge I heard Malcomson sold out. Ford So did his cronies, but that K is killing us. Dodge Do what you want now. You got rid of the parasites. Ford The time I waste on business, I could put into cars. Dodge You got the time gear set the way you want? Ford Small and strong that's how I want it. Dodge I don't like small. I worry about intake. Ford Barthel and Wills both like those spray carburetors, but if you put that on you'll load the engine with more big gadgets. I'm after something light, simple and powerful, a small engine where things work in together. Dodge You need a stronger metal. Ford This engine business is simple, piston down |
Couzens I don't care if you started your own company. Just get out of Ford. Malcomson You started a new company and stayed. Couzens Ford Manufacturing is a Ford subsidiary. Malcomson Then why didn't I get stock? Couzens Because I hate your guts. Malcomson Ha! Ford sales are dropping. My Aero Company is a sure winner. Couzens Sales stink from that damn Model K. Malcomson That is funny. I persuade Grey to make a luxury car. To spite me, you squeeze me out, but you go down because of the car I stuck you with! Couzens The By-Laws require you to sell to another sharehold. Malcomson I wrote the By-Laws, son, and I sold out to Ford. Couzens What! Malcomson He told me about your deal. You'll get your half. You and Ford are saps! My company made the money Ford did on credit secured by stock Couzens One slip and you'll go under. Malcomson Fry and Bennett sold out with me. That's one slip on you. Ford bought them out! |
